Take care of home first by Bob Piesz
I don’t know about you, but I’m getting sick and tired of seeing commercials about all the poor children in third world countries. It’s not because I’m selfish, but for the simple fact that I never see commercials about the poor in our own country. America needs to get its priorities in line. We should take care of our own before we start taking care of others. Our poor, our orphans, and our schools are all neglected yet charities are more concerned about the kids in third world countries. As a citizen of America I do feel bad for these people suffering in other countries, but if I’m paying taxes I want my money to help my own country. How come it’s not a celebrity trend to adopt orphans from America? Orphans in America are just as important as any other child in the world. I do not understand why people go through all the hassle to adopt a child from out of the country when we have thousands of orphans around our own country. It’s as if they are buying a new exotic pet. If you are going to adopt a child why not help a fellow American? An orphan in America needs just as much love as an orphan in Korea. Why is it that we need a giant disaster for people to start donating money? After hurricane Katrina people donated millions of dollars to help the victims, same goes for September 11th. I’m not saying that they didn’t deserve the money in ANY WAY, but what makes them any better than any other person who is homeless or poor? Most of them have struggled for their whole entire life. How come people don’t donate millions and millions to help them? Granted people do donate money to help the poor, but not as much as they would if it was a big tragedy. The poor are easily forgotten and hardly ever covered by the media. I guess Lindsay Lohan getting another DUI is more important than someone having to sell their body just to feed their children. Our schools are becoming overcrowded and poorly run. Not by choice, but because of the lack of money allocated to them. Schools should be a priority in America, but instead we poor all of our money in to a quagmire of a war. The High School I just graduated from was heavily affected by cutbacks. We had every other light off in the hallways, shop classes were cut, teachers were fired, and the end result of all of this was students suffering. How is this possible in such a rich country? When did our education become second to a stupid war? It’s absurd.I want to help the neglected people all around the world, but honestly American citizens come first to me. As an American I want the best for my country and the best for its people. I hate seeing people struggle in their day to day life’s when we are living in one of the richest countries in the world. It’s sickening. America needs to get its act together and start taking care of its own people. Our orphans, schools, and poor are all being neglected and no one seems to be doing anything about it, except talking. Talking can only go so far. I wish I had the power to make drastic changes, but I do not. I can only write this editorial and hope for changes. What needs to be done for politicians to start caring about these things instead of them worrying about what religion they are or wither or not they are for abortion? American’s need to band together and elect someone who can make changes in 2008. If not, thousands of our own citizens will slip further through the cracks.

Sorority Girls
"So last night I so hooked up with this XYZ chick at that date party last night". This how how most conversations starts when a guy is talking about a sorority girl right? Wrong! First the common mistake made buy most is that we are not chicks, girls, or women. We ladies and act and demand such respect.
Many people think ladies that are in a sorority join to hook up with fraternity guys, and party all the time. Well we actually joined for quite the opposite reasons. Some of the ladies that go through recruitment joined to have a sense of family here at school since they are living away from home or they just may not know very many people here at FIU. Some join because they enjoy the many available leadership opportunities through the organization of their choice. While others join to take part in our philanthropic events. And the fact that many may find interesting is that many sorority ladies are most either single or date GDI's. So the next time you see a sorority lady please do try to rethink your views and remember we are ladies who are striving to better ourselves.

It's all about me
I first need to plan what aspect of my life that I would like to write about. I realize that it needs to be a topic that I can clearly remember details of. And that I would feel comfortable enough sharing to the public, yet close enough to me that I will be able to give vivid discription of the event. I decided to write my paper on was 9-11. Since 9-11 personally affected my life and continues to effect every aspect of my everyday life. I choose this because it was an event that all though effected me personally it effected peoples lives all around the world. So everyone will be able to relate to my topic. With this topic I will be able to use the technique of exploding events to make the reader feel as though they are personally experiencing this event. As well as retoric, to guide the reader through my paper. The point that I am going to try to express in my writing is that family can not always be reliable. There will be people to help you out of the hole but it does not have to be your family. The main thing is to relay on yourself.
Who can I trust?
The people that are close to us are always the people that we trust the most. Naturally the people that are the closes to us are our family members. These are the people that know our deepest darkest secrets. We are prone to opening up to our family since we are connected genetically to these people. They are supposed to be our support system. The people that we lean on when times get hard. They are the shoulder to cry on. They will be there for you when no one else is. Does this not sound like the perfect set up? You have this group of people bond to you for life by these microscopic genes. And because of this bond they are supposed to be your unconditional support system. Well I hate to break it to all of you that thought this was the perfect idea but it all does not always work out this well. I no longer trust a person so easily just because they are related to me by blood. The bottom of the line is that people will be people and their and their true personalities will shine through no matter how thick the bonds. Often times those who are closes to you will be the ones that hurt you the most. They have everything to hold against you and to use to their advantage. Because you open up to your family they turn things around all the time. My family is infamous for these types of tricks. Using your weakness against you. If you allow these people to use you sins and or pains against you then you are only allowing them to win the eternal battle you verses the universe.

Art
Stain glass window one of the things that interest people the most about Catholic Churches. How ever has anyone every really thought about why these churches choose to have these intricate windows rather than the regular clear glass. Well I have a theory as to why this choose was made. Often times one would but a stain glass window in a place that you would like the light to come through but do not want people to see through. the stained glass serves as more than a light source that happens to be pretty it acts as a barricade. In the there are many things that go on in the church that its own people do not know. The church hides these things. These windows are screaming scandal, lies, and deceit. From the outside the church looks beautiful and rich when in actuality it is ugly and dark. Have you ever wondered why a place covered in windows is so dark at high noon. I did and the conclusion i came to is because evil spirits flow through it.Jo Camel

Many of us may recognize this infamous character as Jo Camel. He acted as the face of Camel Cigarettes. In this ad it depicts the effects of cigarettes. Its does this because we all knew and loved the face of Camel Cigarettes. He was cool and fun with cigarette always in hand. Now here he is no longer so happy or sporting a "cool" looking cigarette. He is in a hospital bed looking somber, and frail. I believe what this advertisment is trying to depict is the effects of smoking and how not cool smoking is.

The Courtyard
Part A
As I sit in the courtyard of my apartment I look around and really take in my surroundings. There is a bright sun shining warming my skin and giving it a golden glow. There a large lush trees bordering the building. To the left of me boys and girls all playing harmoniusly on the basketball court. Than I look to the right of me and I see a group of students sitting chatting. Sitting here I feel relaxed and at peace with the world and its surroundings.
Part B
I am currently sitting in the courtyard of my apartment buliding. While sitting here I take a minute to take in my surroundings. I can see the sun shinning way too brightly almost blinding me. Than I feel the Florida suns rays, it feels as if it is burning my skin off. There are large trees surrounding the buliding dripping water from the daily afternoon shower onto the people passing under it. Than i look over to my left and I see a group of people playing basketball, I can hear them yelling plays to their teammates and the ball loudly bouncing off the pavement. Than I look over to the right of where I am sitting and I see another group of students also loudly talking and laughing about what seems to me as nothing. They are also smoking the last straw for me. After sitting here for five minutes I become uncomfortable, hot, and irratable so I will no go back inside to my apartment.
Believing and Doubting Game: Safety
Believe
What would one as a citizen of the United States of Americans do for safety? Well, many would say anything. However, in actuality they really would not want to do much. But how can this be if we are a country of self government, run by its people. To protect our selves as a nation we there are some liberties that we must give away to take the needed steps towards security. In the formation of our country we agreed that we would have a "social contract". What this "contract" untiled was that people would surrender freedom in return for protection. Now, as citizens we agreed to this "contract" in the formation of our country this is what we as a nation should stand by.
Doubting
Many people believe that we should not have to give up any of our liberties for the protection of our nation. Protection is the job of our government, so they should have a better system. These are the thoughts of many people today with many of the heightened security alerts. In America we fought for our individual rights and they should not be compromised. Many people whom are not natives of America fled their country to come here for all the liberties that we enjoy so to have them taken away does not seem fair. In addition to that if we allow the government to take away these liberties what else in the future will the government try to take from us and we the people just allow it. By allowing the government to take away our liberties which are also our power we might even find ourselves back under the rule of a tyranny. Which by the way our fore father fought and many died trying to free us from.

Homelessness in the US
One day last year in my English class, a very interesting conversation came up. The conversation was about the treatment of homeless people in the United States. Every day in most parts of the United States someone will walk past at least one homeless person without even thinking twice about it. I had never really thought much about it much before until my professor brought up the topic. The class had a wide array of opinions on the treatment of the homless. Other seemed not to care less what happened to these people, while others such as myself seemed very concerned about their well being.
Some of the issues that i found interesting was:
~ Should the homeless be put in mental hospitals just to be kept out of the view of "society"?
~ Why has the govenment not had a more active role in the issues of homelessness?
~ How can we make the homeless more productive assets to society?
~ What types o f programs are avalible to the homeless to get them jobs, food and housing?
~ How can we prevent people from ending up on the streets?
~ How do we get treatment for the mentally ill that are homeless?
~ How do we decrease the number of homeless people in America?
