Take care of home first by Bob Piesz

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting sick and tired of seeing commercials about all the poor children in third world countries. It’s not because I’m selfish, but for the simple fact that I never see commercials about the poor in our own country. America needs to get its priorities in line. We should take care of our own before we start taking care of others. Our poor, our orphans, and our schools are all neglected yet charities are more concerned about the kids in third world countries. As a citizen of America I do feel bad for these people suffering in other countries, but if I’m paying taxes I want my money to help my own country. How come it’s not a celebrity trend to adopt orphans from America? Orphans in America are just as important as any other child in the world. I do not understand why people go through all the hassle to adopt a child from out of the country when we have thousands of orphans around our own country. It’s as if they are buying a new exotic pet. If you are going to adopt a child why not help a fellow American? An orphan in America needs just as much love as an orphan in Korea. Why is it that we need a giant disaster for people to start donating money? After hurricane Katrina people donated millions of dollars to help the victims, same goes for September 11th. I’m not saying that they didn’t deserve the money in ANY WAY, but what makes them any better than any other person who is homeless or poor? Most of them have struggled for their whole entire life. How come people don’t donate millions and millions to help them? Granted people do donate money to help the poor, but not as much as they would if it was a big tragedy. The poor are easily forgotten and hardly ever covered by the media. I guess Lindsay Lohan getting another DUI is more important than someone having to sell their body just to feed their children. Our schools are becoming overcrowded and poorly run. Not by choice, but because of the lack of money allocated to them. Schools should be a priority in America, but instead we poor all of our money in to a quagmire of a war. The High School I just graduated from was heavily affected by cutbacks. We had every other light off in the hallways, shop classes were cut, teachers were fired, and the end result of all of this was students suffering. How is this possible in such a rich country? When did our education become second to a stupid war? It’s absurd.I want to help the neglected people all around the world, but honestly American citizens come first to me. As an American I want the best for my country and the best for its people. I hate seeing people struggle in their day to day life’s when we are living in one of the richest countries in the world. It’s sickening. America needs to get its act together and start taking care of its own people. Our orphans, schools, and poor are all being neglected and no one seems to be doing anything about it, except talking. Talking can only go so far. I wish I had the power to make drastic changes, but I do not. I can only write this editorial and hope for changes. What needs to be done for politicians to start caring about these things instead of them worrying about what religion they are or wither or not they are for abortion? American’s need to band together and elect someone who can make changes in 2008. If not, thousands of our own citizens will slip further through the cracks.
